Varis debut

A VARIS in stand-by mode

The Variable Ammunition Repulsion Impact Spitfire (VARIS) (ヴァリス, Vu~arisu) is a special armament designed exclusively for the Z-01 Lancelot and its successors, serving as its primary means to engage the enemy in long range combat. A revolutionary weapon based on railgun technology, it fires green beam-like rounds. By changing the configuration of its barrel (aka. Impact Rail) between Normal Mode (straight beams) and Burst Mode (spherical beams), it can adapt the repulsion force applied on the projectile to suit any combat situation. It boasts destructive power far greater than that of the coilgun-based Assault Rifles used by other Knightmare Frames. The only known defensive mechanism that has successfully taken a direct hit and survived a normal VARIS shot is the Guren's Radiant Wave Surger, which was developed by Rakshata Chawla.

When the original Lancelot was upgraded to the Lancelot Conquista, it received a special function for its VARIS. By mounting the rifle into the larger, blue apparatus affixed to its Float System, it is able to form a Hadron Blaster for combat. The Conquista's successor, the Lancelot Albion, is equipped with two upgraded versions of the VARIS, called the "Super VARIS". This improved version of the rifle includes two barrels as opposed to one, and firing blue beams as opposed to green. It also bears 3 firing modes as opposed to 2: Normal, Hadron, and Full Burst. Normal Mode fires high-powered shots, Full Burst Mode serves as a highly destructive energy-based machine gun, and Hadron Mode causes the rifle's barrels to separate and reveal a hidden Hadron Cannon.

During the Kowa Era, a new version of the VARIS Rifle was created for the latest Lancelot model, the Lancelot siN. Called the "C7-anti-material-V.A.R.I.S.", it incorporates technology from the Black Knights in its design. When it was built, the Hadron Mode from the Albion's Super V.A.R.I.S. was omitted, leaving it with only 2 firing modes: Normal Mode and Full Burst Mode. Its shots take the form of lasers, like the Super VARIS, but colored green, like the original VARIS.
