His action of killing his father left significant trauma on him. He regularly thinks about the event and can even have panic attacks. The event left Suzaku unable to live for his own sake, clinging to other people to justify his life. Schneizel took advantage of this to manipulate Suzaku into becoming his knight. Character History[]

Suzaku is shot.
On a mission to recover a canister of poison gas stolen by terrorists, Suzaku enters an old subway line in the shinjuku ghetto. He discovers the canister and reports back, being told to stay put by his superiors. When the canister opens, Suzaku immediately moves to force his gas mask on the person standing beside it, but is shocked to see a girl fall out of the canister. He quickly regains his composure and tells the terrorist not to move and that they should stop killing. The man points out that the canister clearly isn't poison gas and blames the killing on the Britannians. Suzaku claims that he is fighting to protect people, but the man states that he should be fighting against Britannia. This causes Suzaku to recognize the person as Lelouch. Suzaku then removes his helmet, allowing Lelouch to recognize him as well. Lelouch asks why Suzaku became a Britannian soldier, but Suzaku wonders why Lelouch became a terrorist, which Lelouch denies. The Disposal Squad then arrives and Suzaku is initially commended for stalling. He is then ordered to shoot the terrorists. Suzaku attempts to explain that Lelouch is just a civilian, but his superior does not care and again orders him to do it. Suzaku refuses and is shot by the commander.
Suzaku wakes up with his injuries patched up. He immediately wonders where Lelouch is, but a man tells him that he survived and explains that the pocket watch he was carrying blocked the bullet. The man introduces himself as Lloyd with the Advanced Special Envoy Engineering Corps and asks Suzaku if he wants to work with him and have the power to change the world.
Later on, as Suzaku walks through the hallway, he overhears people talking about how the Disposal squad was seemingly killed by one man. Suzaku wonders if it was Lelouch, but his thoughts are interrupted by a girl suddenly grabbing his wrist and pulling him off somewhere. He asks who she is, but all she says its that she had been waiting for him to recover before bringing him to Lloyd. Lloyd welcomes him, but Suzaku wonders why he's there. Lloyd asks the girl if she explained anything and after some thinking he acknowledges that she didn't. Lloyd apologizes and introduces the girl as Mariel Lubie, part of ASEEC. Suzaku attempts to greet her, but she tells him to call her Elle, telling him she’ll kill him if he calls her Mariel.
Later, Suzaku questions Lloyd why an eleven soldier like him is able to join ASEEC and Lloyd points out that he is valuable to his research. They then hear over the speakers that Clovis has been assassinated and his killer is still being searched for. Jeremiah then arrives and informs Suzaku that he is being arrested for Clovis's assassination. His arrest is publicly announced later.
When the trial begins, the prosecution states that Suzaku was seen shooting Clovis before fleeing. Suzaku thinks back to before his trial when soldiers had unsuccessfully attempted to beat a confession out of him. After he was returned to his jail cell, Lloyd confirmed that the person Suzaku had asked him to look into, Lelouch, wasn't on the list of casualties, much to Suzaku’s relief. Lloyd then asks if he really wanted to fight the charges despite no one in the trial being on his side, but Suzaku claims that the truth comes to light in courts. But Lloyd refutes this, claiming that the truth is scarce. Suzaku then states that if the world is truly like that, then he has no regrets.

Suzaku being released by Zero.
Back at his trial, right before the verdict is announced, a care bursts into the court room. The man in black steps out and introduces himself as Zero, proclaiming himself to be the one who killed Clovis. Suzaku is immediately taken away by Zero and is led to a location in the ghetto. There, Zero offers Suzaku to join him. Suzaku asks why Zero killed Clovis, but Zero questions why he wouldn't kill the enemy commander in a war. This angers Suzaku who stands by his beliefs that Britannia can be changed from within and immoral means don't have value. An irritated Zero questions if Suzaku would really go back to his trial despite knowing that its rigged. Suzaku doesn't answer and simply leaves, thanking Zero for what he did. On his way out, Zero angrily calls him a fool.
A week later, Suzaku is discharged from the hospital, the charges having been dropped. On his way out, he sees Elle talking to someone. He catches her attention and asks her if she’s sick, but Elle clarifies that she is simply visiting a friend who was hospitalized. She then encourages him to follow her to base.

Lloyd telling Suzaku that he was chosen.
At the ASEEC base, Lloyd happily looks over a monitor. When questioned, he claims to have gotten an excellent guinea pig in the form of Suzaku. Elle and Suzaku then arrive and Lloyd tells Elle that someone was looking for her earlier. Mariel then realizes that she forgot to tell the others that she was going out and leaves to find them. Lloyd then shows Suzaku the prototype infantry suit he will be wearing, the Lancelot. Lloyd explains that while no one can handle it yet, Suzaku has the gifts to be able to and he has been chosen. Mariel then returns, upset that Lloyd told him about the Lancelot without her. She then hands Lloyd a file which he proceeds to hand to Suzaku, explaining that since his research is confidential, Suzaku needed to be promoted to a warrant officer to be a part of it, and the file is Suzaku's letter of promotion. He then gives Suzaku and ID card as well as an acceptance letter from Ashford Academy, courtesy of Mariel.

Suzkau joins Ashford.
Later on, Suzaku officially joins Ashford as a new student. Upon his introduction, he is shocked to see Lelouch in his class. As rumors spread about Suzaku allegedly killing Clovis, Lelouch calls him to an empty classroom. The two express their concern for each other before Lelouch states that he knew Suzaku wasn't Clovis's murderer from the start. Suzaku explains that zero helped him out and Lelouch questions if he's still in the military. Suzaku confirms it and Lelouch angrily questions his decision. Just then, some students walk by and, not noticing the presence of he boys, question Lelouch's decision to talk to Suzaku, assuming Suzaku is threatening him in some way. This urges Suzaku to tell Lelouch to keep his distance from him to avoid hurting his reputation. Lelouch states that eh doesn't care, but Suzaku points out that he couldn't explain their relationship and at worst, his identity of a prince might be revealed.
Over the next few days, Suzaku deal with harassment. While walking in the hallway, students discuss the black knight, spreading rumors about them drug trafficking and calling them terrorists led by a murderer. Suzaku's gym uniform is vandalized. In class, as Kallen walks by him, she drops her handkerchief. Suzaku picks it up and offers it back to her, but another girl insists that Kallen cant use something touched by an eleven and pulls her away. Later on, a bucket of water is dumped on him as he walks through court yard. Lelouch watches all this with frustration.

Suzaku saves Nunnally.
Later on, C.C. is being led by Nunnally to Leblouh's class. Suzaku see this on offers to help her going into the class and getting Lelouch. As Lelouch talks to C.C. Suzaku and Nunnally catch up in the courtyard with Nunnally explaining that since Lelouch wouldn't bring him over, Nunnally came to see him. Lelouch joins hem and Suzaku asks if the girl left. Lelouch confirms and claims she is a distant relative, noting that Suzaku didn't recognize C.C. as the girl in the capsule. He tells Suzaku that all 3 of them live in the clubhouse and Nunnally suggests that they invite Suzaku to dinner. Just then, students who are moving furniture upstairs bump into a window, breaking it. Suzaku tries to cancel the dinner plans, but Lelouch insists. Then, noticing the broken glass that is about to fall on Nunnally, Suzaku quickly jumps in to shield her. She asks if he’s okay and Suzaku says he is, not telling her about a cut on his arm.

Students begin flooding the area and a teacher asks what happened. Lelouch picks up Nunnally and explains a window broke and Suzaku saved Nunnally from the falling glass. The teacher tells Lelouch to take his sister to the nurse and claims that Suzaku somehow caused the problem. Lelouch, irritated, reiterates that Suzaku saved Nunnally and tells Suzaku to come with them to the nurse’s office. As the three leave, the teacher angrily states that Suzaku is just an eleven.
After school, Mariel asks him how it went and he thanks her for allowing him to join school. Mariel explains that Llyod allows her to finish school so Suzaku should at least finish highschool. Lloyd then reveals that Mariel finished graduate school the previous year and has her doctorate, surprising Suzaku. Suzaku then changes into the uniforms for the Lancelot, but before he can put the helmet on, Jeremiah arrives and cancels the test, claiming that he needs Suzaku for a drug trafficking mission involving the black knights.
After being briefed on the mission, Suzaku wonders if the black knights are really drug trafficking. Jeremiah claims that the black knights are just elevens and tells Suzaku to clean up the guards inside the building. Suzaku agrees, putting on the helmet. Mariel tells Suzaku to be careful through the radio and Lloyd tells her that this is good setting for the first test and she shouldn't be worried about Suzaku.

Suzaku acting in the Lancelot.
As Suzaku enters the building, he quickly begins taking down each of the drug traffickers. He impresses himself with the Lancelot's capabilities. Just as he finishes taking them down, several men in handcuffs begin walking down from the upper floor. Zero then appears and is impressed by the masked man’s handiwork, questioning if he is a Britannian soldier. Suzaku then takes Zero’s presence of proof of the Black Knight’s involvement, but Zero explains that the men actually lied about being black knights and for that as well as drug trafficking, they were punished. He then decides to leave the men to Suzaku, but Jeremiah and his forces then arrive. Jeremiah tries to shoot Zero as revenge for Clovis, but C.C. steps in the way and takes the bullet, getting shot in the head. This causes Suzaku to flash back to his father’s death. He has a panic attack and Zero uses the opportunity to activate a smoke screen and escape with C.C.’s body. Later on, Mariel checks on a despondent Suzaku.
Some time later, Suzaku is still dealing with his PTSD regarding his father’s death. During a mission, he briefly freezes and flashes back to the event, only to bebroken out of his stupor by Mariel calling out to him over the coms. Since the previous mission, Suzaku's synchronization rate has dropped from 80% to 35%. As Suzaku approaches the trailer, Mariel asks him if his is okay and Lloyd asks is he was being serious, pointing out his dropped synchronization rate. Mariel then intervenes and insists on taking Suzaku on a date for the afternoon and telling Suzaku to go change.
On their date, Suzaku notes that their still on the clock, but Mariel tells him its fine before asking him if he wants to meet her father, who had wanted to speak to Suzaku. They then see a couple Britannians assaulting an Japanese man inside of a grocery store. Suzaku moves to help, but is stopped by 2 Japanese men in uniform who tell Suzaku that if he gets involved they will all be fired. The man explains that Japanese people like them will lose the ability to work in the settlement if they anger the Britannians. Suzaku reluctantly accepts the situation, but Mariel then steps in and “accidentally” knocks a trashcan into the men and uses an apology as an excuse to pull them away from the Japanese man. Suzuki moves to help the man, but he brushes Suzaku off.

Mariel drags Suzaku to Clovis Land
In the park, Suzaku asks if Mariel’s action was intentional. Rather then giving a direct answer, she states that she threatened the people afterwards, so it was fine. She then asks him if he has issues regarding his father, explaining that when he lost his cool the either day, he shouted out "Father!". Suzaku then takes out his father’s pocket watch, telling Mariel that its a keepsake from his father. He claims to not know but states that he’s been wondering the same about Suzaku, noting that its bene a while since he's been at school. The students around them begin wondering who the Lancelot is, but upon Kallen being asked about it, she remains silent. Lelouch then decides to leave and Suzaku see a magazine talking about the Lancelot.

Lloyd says that he was going to the hospital to see him off and asks if Suzaku wanted to go with him. He explains that Mariel kept talking about Suaku and it sparked her dad’s entrance and since Suzaku is involved with the Lancelot, he should introduce himself.
At the hospital, Lenard thanks Lloyd for coming and he and Suzaku introduce themselves. Lenard then asks him to take care of Mariel, which Suzaku agrees to. Mariel then arrives and drives off with her father. Suzaku notes that Lloyd knows Lenard well and Lloyd explains that he is his former supervisor.

The two take a helicopter to her position and Lloyd nots how he can't reach her. They reach the location and see that the care she was in has crashed and is surrounded by black knight trucks. Lloyd points out that they cant land the helicopter there, but Suzaku claims he doesn't need it to and prepares to jump out. Before he leaps, Lloyd hands him a new sword for the Lancelot. On the train tracks, Suzaku finds the bomb and moves to cut one of the wires. Lelouch hurriedly tells him that he’s out of time as the train approaches. Suzaku narrowly manages to cut the wire and jump off the tracks before the train comes through. As Suzaku calms down, Lelouch tells him to be less rash. Mariel then calls Suzaku and he leaves.
On an Elevator with Mariel, Suzaku questions who he is going to meet. She tells him that he is meeting with Prince Schneizel, much to Suzaku's shock. As they arrive, Suzaku nervously introduces himself, and tells him to be less formal. He asks Suzaku what he thinks of the world, stating that he believes the world should be free without labels such as aristocrat and eleven. He reasons that because such labels exist, people fight each other and breed resentment, which only leads to more fighting. He strives for a world where people can live in peace and asks for Suzaku's cooperation. Suzaku agrees and Schneizel suspects that Suzaku can change the world.
