Marianne vi Britannia (マリアンヌ・ヴィ・ブリタニア Mariannu vi Buritania), was the late Empress of the Holy Britannian Empire and one of the founders of the Ragnarök Connection. She also was the fifth wife of Emporor Charles zi Britannia as well as the mother of Lelouch and Nunnally.
Appearance[]
Marianne was a beautiful young woman who had a slim yet strong build, a tall height, and fair skin. Like her son Lelouch, she had big violet eyes and black hair, although she had it much longer and wavier.
As the Empress, Marianne wore fashionable dresses from elegant blue colors with slightly extravagant accessories to more simple outfits such as a long light orange dress. As a knight, she wore an older white version of the Britannian military uniform at battle, while wearing other elegant dresses during her free time.
Personality[]
Marianne shares Charles' ideals for a peaceful world, trying to help people and disliking bloodshed. However, after her near death at the hands of Anya, she lost faith in her abilities to achieve her goal by relying on the trust of others, concluding that the only way to create a kind a gentle world was to kill god, who she blamed for the conflict present n the world.
Unlike her anime counterpart whose kindness and love towards her children was a mere façade, this Marianne, along with Charles, has genuine love towards her children; accepting Nunnally's decision, in not killing the Gods, where they accepted their end as they say farewell to their daughter that cries during the parting of her parents.
Character Outline[]

Marianne was a commoner that obtain noble status due to her abilities as a knight, though she was only supported by the house of Ashford. At some point, she met C.C. and became her priestess, but didn't receive a geass, as she saw it as a power not meant for humans. At one point, after a battle, Marianne, asked Charles if he can truly bring utopia from such a bloody rule. Marianne stated that geass is too great for humans and its by struggling within their limits that one can be considered human in the first place. After questioning Charles's actions, Charles made her the the lowest ranking of the knights of the round in order to keep an eye on her. With her by his side, he saw the ideals of his parents come back to life and she was attracted to Charles's ideals. They eventually fell in love, got married and gave birth to Lelouch and Nunnally.

Marianne was later fatally wounded in an assassination attempt by Anya Alstreim, who posed as a young girl that came to the palace to learn proper etiquette, but in reality was a brainwashed pawn of the Eden Vital Order. Anya was going to kill Nunnally as well, but was stopped by the arrive of C.C. On the bring of death, Marianne learned that the gentle world she envisioned couldn't be built through trust in others. As Charles held her, he suggested using his geass, but she stated that it resurrected the body, but not he soul. She asks C.C. to bestow a geass on her. C.C. does so and Marianne is able to send her soul into Anya’s body. She then realizes that part of her soul has already returned to Eden’s Vital, and happily announces that they can use this power to achieve their dream.

She Charles, and C.C. would then go on to conclude that conflict only exists in the world because god allows it to, and to truly remove conflict from the world would require killing god. To this end, they begin their plans to establish the Ragnarök Connection, including summoning the Sword of Akasha and using Nunnally and Lelouch to open Heaven's Door.
Character History[]
After Alice and Nunnally enter the Thought Elevator, Anya appears and reveals herself to actually be Marianne commenting on how she's wanted to converse with Nunnally. Nunnally points out that she died, but Marianne explains that thanks to the geass she received from C.C. her soul was able to continue living in Anya’s body.

Nunnally questions why she wasn't told that Marianne was alive, leading Charles and Marianne to explain how their past, how they met, the true circumstances of her death, and their intentions to create a world without conflict. Nunnally is doubtful of the possibility. Marianne explains that she and Charles have focused the energy of all the world’s temples into Kamine Island in order to turn it into the sword of Akasha and slay god, and that by doing so, all humans will return to the collective unconscious that is Eden Vital. Nunnally counters that every human is unique and conflict is the result of differing opinions. Charles and Marianne are undeterred as they believe it is the only way to stop conflicts. Marianne explains that since she put her soul in Anya’s body, part of her soul moved onto Eden’s vital, creating a pathway that they can force Open with the Sword of Akasha. They then claim that Nunnally’s wired geass, The Zero, is the key for opening Heaven’s door.

When Nunnally likens their goal to committing genocide against humanity, Marianne asks if Nunnally knows why geass was born in the world, showing her a vision and explaining that God gave geass to the world solely to spread more conflict and declaring that they will kill god. Nunnally then breaks down and points out how both Charles and Marianne abandoned her and Lelouch, but Marianne says that if she goes through with it, she can be with Lelouch again and people will not suffer anymore. Nunnally flashes back to what's happened and gives in, activating The Zero.
When Alice convinces Nunnally to not give up on the future, Marianne convinces Charles that it's only right to entrust the decision to Nunnally and the two begin to fade away.

After making a contract with C.C., Marianne gained her own Geass, The Soul (ザ・ソウル Za Souru), which allows her to transfer her soul into another person. She used it after being mortally injured by Anya.
Piloting Skills[]
Marianne had impressive piloting skills, being able to easily control one of the earliest Knightmare Frames at extremely high speeds, which allowed her to become a member of the Knights of the Round and gain the nickname of "Marianne the Flash".
