Code Geass: Tales of an Alternate Shogunate (幕末異聞録 コードギアス 反逆のルルーシュ Bakumatsu Ibun Roku Kōdo Giasu Hangyaku no Rurūshu) is manga series and side-story of the Code Geass anime series serialized in Kerokero Ace. Set in an alternate 1867, Suzaku is an officer of the ptrol corps while Lelouch is the commander of the Shogunate's military counterinsurgence brigade known as the Shinsengumi, which fights the Black Restoration Order, a rebel group led by a masked individual known as Rei. It was released on a single volume on October 25, 2010, while the English version was published on May 10, 2011.
Plot[]
Set in an alternate history in 1853 with new characters, Britannia's Black Ships appear in the harbor of Uraga. In 1867, Lelouch Lamperouge — brother to a young blind girl named Nunnally — is the commander of the military counter insurgence brigade known as the Shinsengumi, formed under the orders of the Shogunate to fight the Black Revolutionaries, a rebel group led by a mysterious masked individual known as Rei. In fact, these two organizations are one and the same, and they seek to combat in influences of Britannia.
Synopsis[]
Story 1: The Chivalrous Thief Zero Appears[]
In the Bakumatsu Era, 1853, Perry launches an unprovoked attack on Japan, acting as an envoy of the Holy Britannian Empire. He claims to want peace, but the shogun makes clear that Japan desires to remain isolated. Perry then activates his geass and uses it to command the shogun and his forces to open themselves up to the world.
Some years later, in Kyoto, Suzaku Kururugi, an officer of the Patrol Corps chases the thief Zero. When Zero is corners, he summons his knightmare, Gawain. Zero uses the Gawain to fly away, proclaiming that he is returning the wealth that was stolen by Britannia and rains stolen money upon the people.
Suzaku is later disciplined for his failure by Special Inspection Officer Jeremiah, who repeatedly strikes him with a riding crop while complaining about how Zero has even stolen knightmares. He is then interrupted by Lelouch, who throws an apple at him and helps Suzaku up. Jeremiah then demands to know who Lelouch is and Lelouch introduces himself as the commander of the Shinsengumi, Lelouch Lamperouge. Despite Jeremiah's protest Lelouch takes Suzaku, pointing out that Zero only escaped due to someone leaking security measures, which is Jeremiah's responsibility.
Later on, Suzaku, Lelouch and Nunnally are discussing Zero, with Suzaku claiming that while he is a thief, he doesn't hurt people as is viewed as a hero among the public. After Nunnally leaves to pick up a pizza, Lelouch and Suzaku discuss the Black Restoration Order. Lelouch admits that he already gave up on the investigation inot them as their hands are already busy. Suzaku suggests that the situation will change for Zero, telling Lelouch that the newest knight mare from the peace preservation force, the Lancelot, will be deployed.
Later on, Zero is talking to the Shinsengumi and lays out that the Lancelot will be carried by the blackship, Avalon, at Koubeikou’s 2nd pier. Tamaki points out that they don't have any boat, but Zero reveals a life raft they will use to sneak onto the Avalon. He then tells Kallen that she will pull a diversion using the Guren Nishiki and commands them all to move out, revealing themselvesto be the Black Restoration Order.
Suzaku is observing Avalon. Jeremiah tells him to be on guard, reminding him that the Black Restoration Order might attack. Just then, the Guren Nishiki appears and while the other guards are frightened, Suzaku steps and tries to fight it with his sword. As Kallen fights Sukaku, Zero notices the chaos and proceeds with the plan. Suzaku manages to avoid the Guren’s every attack. Meanwhile Jerimiah is telling him to seize them, but is interrupted by Gawain. Zero announces that the Restoration Order will take good care of Lancelot, but Princess Euphemia appears and gives Suzaku the start up key for the knightmare and ordering him to mobilize it. Suzaku states that only Britannians are allowed to use knightmares, but Euphemia brushes the concern off and tells him to stop them. Suzaku obliges and goes to the Lancelot, jumping passed the Guren and cutting the cables Gawain was using to pick it up. He then jumpers in the knightmare and begins piloting it.
Story 2: Lancelot Danced Forth[]
As Suzaku prepares to face Zero, Zero enters the Gawain and removes his helmet, revealing himself to be Lelouch. Despite Lelouch's confidence, Suzaku quickly overwhelms the Gawain, cutting off one of its arms. Lelouch tries to counter by firing the hadron cannons, but Suzaku manages to avoid it. Lelouch then reveals numerous knightmare frames hidden around them. Euphemia then informs Suzkau over the radio that the Lancelot’s combat ability surpasses all previous generation knightmares. Zero tries to grab Euphemia with the gawain, but is interrupted by the Lancelot’s VARIS rifle. Suzaku then manages to overwhelm all the enemy knightmares. This pushes Lelouch to use his geass to summon a large ship so that the Black restoration Order can retreat. While most of the Order members get on the ship and escape, Zero and C.C. are shot down by the Lancelot’s VaRIS Rifle and fall into the sea.
After the battle, Suzaku apologizes to Euphemia for failing, but she clarifies that he succeeded in protecting the Lancelot. She calls him a reliable person before Suzaku is called away by Jeremiah. As he leaves, Lloyd asks Euphemia if they can depend on him and she states that he meets all the qualifications.
Despite their efforts, the Britannian forces are unable to locate Zero and Jeremiah suspects that a criminal might hide out in Kyoto Gion. Jeremiah goes to search the area and investigates an inn where he happens upon C.C.., but, not knowing her true identity, he leaves her alone before heading o the next room, where he finds a pool of blood. Jerimiah then tells his forces to search the area. Once they leave, Lelouch emerges from a portal, having used his geass to hide. As Jeremiah's forces move on Suzaku, still felling the room to suspicious, heads back and discovers it empty, sans an Ashford Pizza Coupon for Mayonnaise Natto pizza.
Story 3: Decisive Battle! The Black Restoration Order[]
Diethard leads Zero and C.C. to a warehouse where Rakshata is working on upgrading knightmares. She announces having completed the Guren Kashoushiki, the Zangetsu, the Black Akatsuki, and the Shinkiro. Diethard informs Zero that they have identified Euphemia as the one who witnessed their previous operation and Zero clarifies that he already knows about the member of the imperial family before explaining their next operation.
Suzaku is walking with Nunnally to a pizza place in town. Nunnally is surprised he likes pizza, like Lelouch, but Suzaku explain that he just wanted to try it and wonders if Lelouch orders it often, leading Nunnally to reveal that Lelouch often asked her to order pizzas and deliver them to his quarters. Suzaku suspects that he does this in order to make himself harder to trace. Nunnally wonders why Suzaku is keeping the trip secret from Lelouch, but Suzaku claims its because he worries too much.
As they enter the shop, Milly and Shirley are working the register. Someone then orders that Suzaku stop as the restaurant only serves Britannians. Suzaku turns around to find Anya, Euphemia, and Gino, who was messing with him. Euphemia greats him and Suzaku quickly takes a knee. She tells him not to be so formal before introducing , Anya and Gino. Gino commends Suzaku for piloting the Lancelot before apologizing for interrupting Suzaku’s date. Suzaku clarifies that he’s there it investigate Zero and shows him the coupon. Suzaku explains the Nattou Mayonaise pizza was unpopular and they stopped selling it several months agon, before that, Nunnally was the only person who ordered the pizza and she delivered it to the Shinsengumi. This led Suzaku to realize that Lelouch, the leader of the Shinsengumi, must also be the leader of the Black Restoration Order.
Lelouch explain that the Black Restoration Order’s mission is to secure the sakuradite mine at the base of Mt. Fuji and that doing so will be an act of war. They begin the operation, and while initially successful, they are stopped short by the arrival of Siegfried piloted by Jeremiah, which attacks the Shinkiro. Jeremiah claims that he was going to become Euphemia’s knight before Zero’s attack and blames Zero for his resentment. Lelouch orders Kallen to shoot him down along with the Siegfried. Kallen is hesitant, but Lelouch assures her of his survival and she obliges. As the blast hones in, Lelouch uses his geass to vanish before it hits, leading to Jeremiah to be the only casualty.
After Jeremiah is shot down, Perry considers him useless before claiming that he will move out he Blackship and cleanse the rebels. As the Blackship is deployed, Lelouch order his forces to attack it, but they are suddent hit from Britannian reinforcements from behind, including Gino, Suzaku, and Anya.
Last Story: Defeat Perry! The True Opening of Japan to the World[]
Suzaku asks Zero what the meaning of true restoration is. Zero declares that Japan is in the middle of a false opening; while foreigners are able to come to Japan, the opposite isn't true and the Japanese are being controlled by Admiral Perry. What he aims for is a true opening of Japan. Now understanding Zero’s intention, Suzaku offers him a hand, revealing that he knows his true identity as Lelouch.
This infuriates Perry who claims that such an act is betraying Britannia, but Suzaku reveals that Euphemia had already informed him of Perry’s suspicious rise to power and influence and his desire to make Japan his own property. Frustrated that his plans had been discovered, PErry launches every knightmare at his disposal against the Black Restoration Order. Lelouc then order his forces to fight alongside BRitannia to defeat Perry. He then uses the SHinkiro to eliminate a large number if Knightmares. Suzaku, Gino, and Anya also defeat several knightmares.
As Kallen lands on the blackship, she installs a unit onto the deck. The ship then suddenly starts shaking and transforms into a massive knightmare. It then fires a massive blasts and wipes out multiply enemy knightmares. As Perry proclaims the Black Perry’s power, Lelouch is unfazed. He explains to Suzaku that the device Kallen placed on the knightmare was an interior trace that gave him a layout of the airships interior. He then uses his geass to summon the Gawain, piloted by C.C. into the airship. Th Gawain then begins destroying the Black Perry from the inside. Fearful, Perry activates a barrier around the cockpit. Suzaku tries to pierce the barrier, but is captured by Perry. Despite this, he manages to break the barrier, giving Lelouch the opportunity to attack and destroy the airship.
Perry manages to survive and contemplates using his geass to raise another army, but he is cornered by Suzaku. Perry tries to use his geass on Suzaku, but Suzaku reflect it back to him using the reflection of his sword.
In Bakumatsu 1867, Japan achieves a true opening to the world and Suzaku and Euphemia are praised for their efforts. C.C. wonders if Lelouch is fine with this, and he states that the country will do well if left to Suzaku. Lelouch then opens a portal and summons the Gawain before the two of them depart, with all information about them, even from official documents being erased.
