Chess in Code Geass seems to follow from the same basic rule from the the real Chess, Chess seems to play an Important Role in Britannian Nobility as seen in the Series most of the players are usually from the rank of Nobilities. In Code Geass Chess is only seen as one of the setting and it rarely seen other than as a plot. Sometimes Chess can be used as a form of Gambling where Lelouch is most known for, sometimes he appeared as an aide while sometimes he play the game himself. Lelouch is very skillful at Chess as he always seen winning against his opponent with the exception of Mao (who has Mind-Reading ability thanks to his Geass) and Schneizel (the only opponent Lelouch can't defeat when he was a child). Lelouch seems to favour moving the "King" this move surprised everyone who watch it and usually he quote "If the king does not move, his subordinates will not follow." Lelouch use Chess as a way to make money and to kill time confirming his apathy toward life.
